Singularity Software License Agreement
Last updated 2 November 2026
This Software License Agreement (“Agreement”) is between Legal Machines (“Legal Machines”, “we”, “us”) and the organisation that creates a Singularity account (the “Organisation”). It governs the Singularity application and the models Legal Machines provides for it. By installing or using Singularity, creating an Organisation or joining one as a member, the Organisation accepts this Agreement. Words defined in the Terms of Use have the same meaning here.
1. License
Legal Machines grants the Organisation a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable and royalty-free license to install Singularity on the Organisation’s computers and to use it, through its seats, for the Organisation’s business, including its work for its clients, while this Agreement is in effect.
2. No charge
Singularity, its updates and the account service are currently provided free of charge, and nothing is payable under this Agreement. If Legal Machines offers paid models or services, they are agreed separately and in advance.
3. Open-source components and source-available publication
Singularity includes open-source components, each licensed under its own license. For each such component, that license prevails over this Agreement, and nothing in this Agreement restricts a right it grants.
Legal Machines publishes Singularity’s source code under the Legal Machines Singularity License, a source-available license. That license governs the published code. This Agreement governs the official builds Legal Machines distributes and, in every case, Legal Machines’ models, model catalog and account service.
4. Models
Papinian Guard masks client details with a protection model that runs on the Organisation’s computers and that Singularity downloads from Legal Machines’ model catalog. That model is the GLiNER2 privacy model published by Fastino (fastino/gliner2-privacy-filter-PII-multi), converted to run in Singularity without further training. Its publisher licenses it under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (https://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0): it is an open-source component under Section 3, and that license governs the Organisation’s rights in it.
Legal Machines may also provide models of its own for use in Singularity (“Legal Machines’ models”). Legal Machines grants the Organisation a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable license to use them within Singularity, on the Organisation’s computers, while this Agreement is in effect. The Organisation must not copy them out of Singularity, distribute them, or use them to train or improve another model.
Models published by others that the Organisation uses in Singularity, such as open-weight models published on Hugging Face, are licensed by their publishers under their own licenses, and Legal Machines is not responsible for them.
Masking is not guaranteed. Papinian Guard and its model can fail to detect or mask any client detail, including a name, an amount or an identifier, in any language and in any document, and can mask or restore a detail wrongly. Published test results describe the documents tested, not the Organisation’s documents. The Organisation decides what it sends to any provider and is responsible for checking it. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Legal Machines is not liable for any loss, damage, claim, cost or liability, of any kind and in any amount, arising from information that Papinian Guard does not mask, masks wrongly or restores wrongly, including any disclosure of client, confidential or personal information to a provider, any breach of confidentiality, privilege or data protection law, and any claim by a client or another third party.
5. Ownership
Legal Machines and its licensors own Singularity, including its published source code, and Legal Machines’ models, including all intellectual property rights in them; third-party open-source components belong to their owners.
6. Restrictions
Except where this Agreement, the Legal Machines Singularity License, an open-source license under Section 3 or the law allows it, the Organisation must not:
- sell, rent, lease, sublicense or distribute Singularity or Legal Machines’ models to anyone outside the Organisation;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble Legal Machines’ models, or the parts of Singularity that are published under neither the Legal Machines Singularity License nor an open-source license;
- remove or alter license notices, or circumvent the authentication of the account service or the model catalog; or
- use Singularity in breach of the Terms of Use.
7. AI model providers
Singularity can connect to AI models from third-party providers, for example OpenAI, or the providers reached through OpenRouter, with API credentials the Organisation supplies. Singularity is designed to keep those credentials on the Organisation’s own computers. Each provider is an independent service governed by its own terms, privacy practices and security measures, not by this Agreement; Legal Machines does not control it and is not responsible for its processing, availability, pricing, outputs or behaviour. Papinian Guard reduces what a provider sees, as the Organisation’s protection settings require, but cannot guarantee that no protected information reaches it. Which provider to use, and for what, is the Organisation’s decision, and the Organisation alone is responsible for its accounts with providers, their charges and what it sends to them, and must comply with each provider’s terms.
8. Updates
Legal Machines may make updates to Singularity available, but has no obligation to provide updates, support or maintenance. Some updates may be needed to keep using the account service or the model catalog, for example for security. This Agreement applies to every update unless the update comes with different terms.
Singularity checks legalmachines.org for updates when it starts, regularly while it runs, and whenever a person asks it to. It downloads an update only when a person chooses to, accepts it only if it carries Legal Machines’ signature and matches the size and fingerprint that signature covers, and never installs it by itself: a person installs it by running the installer. Legal Machines provides Singularity and its updates only from legalmachines.org and the places it names there, and is not responsible for a copy obtained anywhere else. An Organisation that does not install an update keeps using its earlier version at its own risk.
9. Term and termination
This Agreement lasts until it is ended. The Organisation may end it at any time by uninstalling Singularity and stopping its use. Legal Machines may end it, or suspend the licenses in it, at any time, with or without notice and for any reason, including a breach of this Agreement or the Terms of Use. When it ends, the licenses in Sections 1 and 4 end, and the Organisation must stop using Singularity and delete Legal Machines’ models; its own work and data remain its own. Subject to Section 3, the restrictions in Sections 4 and 6, the last paragraph of Section 4, and Sections 5, 7, 10 and 11, continue to apply.
10. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
Singularity, its updates, Papinian Guard and every model Singularity downloads or runs, including Legal Machines’ models, are provided “as is”, “as available” and with all faults, without any warranty that they will detect, mask or protect any information. The Disclaimers (Section 11) and the Limitation of liability (Section 12) of the Terms of Use apply to this Agreement in full, and Legal Machines’ total liability under this Agreement and the Terms of Use, taken together, is limited as Section 12 of the Terms of Use sets out. The exclusion of liability in Section 4 applies in addition to those limits.
11. Terms that also apply
These sections of the Terms of Use apply to this Agreement as if they were written in it: Professional responsibility (Section 6), Disclaimers (Section 11), Limitation of liability (Section 12), Indemnity (Section 13), Changes (Section 14), Governing law and disputes (Section 15) and General (Section 16). Under them, this Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, and the state and federal courts located in Delaware decide disputes about it.
